Caloosa Spirit

Catalina 42 mkII

After many years of planning and preparation, Alice and Jim Rutherford sold their home in Indiana, and moved aboard Caloosa Spirit, their dream boat, in November 2002. In July 1997 they assisted in Caloosa Spirit’s 1600-mile delivery from Florida to the British Virgin Islands, and at the end of Caloosa Spirit’s five years of charter service, they sailed her 1100 miles back to Florida. They have leisurely cruised both coasts of Florida, the Florida Keys, the East Coast to Chesapeake Bay, and the Bahamas. Living aboard gives them wonderful opportunities to visit new places and to meet new people.

Mike as crew

Son Mike grew up weekending on the family’s Catalina 25 sailboat, Phantasie II. Adding to his extensive experience on a cruising sailboat, he became an accomplished Laser II sailor as a teenager. In his adult years he has spent time in other pursuits, such as computer technology and hand drumming, but he still enjoys sailing when the opportunity arises. He makes a great crew member! Mike lives in Sarasota, FL, where he owns a web hosting business with two partners. With beautiful Sarasota Bay just minutes away, hopefully, a sailboat will be in his future some day.

Lauri and Alex

Daughter Lauren rounded out the crew on Phantasie II as a youngster. She also further developed her sailing skills with her brother on the Laser IIs during her teen years. Lauri has remained in Indianapolis, where she works as an administrative assistant in a major downtown church. She and Alex were married in ‘08, and they really enjoy being together taking care of their lovely new home. Alex has already learned some crewing skills, so whenever they need a break from the northern climate, they always have a vacation berth available on Caloosa Spirit.
